Tennessee law that had prevented death-row prisoners from challenging their death sentences on the basis of intellectual disability,
Pervis Payne’s (pictured) lawyers asked a Memphis trial court to vacate his death sentence.
On May 12, 2021, federal defenders representing Payne filed a
Petition to Determine Ineligibility to be Executed in the Shelby County Criminal Court seeking that the court “declare that Mr. Payne is ineligible to be executed because he is intellectually disabled.” Prior to the bill’s May 11 signing, Tennessee lacked a mechanism for prisoners to litigate their ineligibility for the death penalty if their death sentences had already been upheld on appeal before the U.S. Supreme Court issued its 2002 decision in

The DAâs office says Hollingsworth was also indicted on felony counts of convicted felon in possession of a firearm and tampering with evidence.
The incident happened on Dec. 7 in the parking lot of McDonaldâs on Highway 70 in Arlington. The DAâs office says the trio was set to buy marijuana from two other people but the transaction didnât go well.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - A group of law enforcement officers that work to keep drugs and criminals off the streets in West Tennessee received a huge honor this week.
The West Tennessee Drug Task Force interdiction team has been named the 2020 Team of the Year.
These law enforcement officers reduce illegal drug trafficking, by working with 932 agencies along the major drug corridors like I-40.
“These guys never quit coming to work. They never quit hitting the streets. They never quit searching for criminals who are trying to destroy communities and trying to harm lives,” said Amy Weirich, Shelby County District Attorney General.

A Tennessee man is facing new charges nearly a year after a fatal shooting in Memphis was captured on a social media livestream.
The Shelby County District Attorney s office said on Monday (May 3) that 37-year-old
Patricia Draper Bryant,
Fox 17 reports. Bryant, 55, was shot and killed May 16, 2020, while holding her young grandson.
The incident began with an argument on Facebook, according to prosecutors, before evolving into a physical fight that was streamed on Facebook Live. Investigators said that a group of women holding various weapons, such as bats and knives, got into a fight outside a Frayser residence, and two of the women then began smashing windows at the home.
