ROWAN COUNTY, Kentucky (LEX 18) – App Harvest, an ag-tech company in Rowan County, announced Tuesday that it will expand its educational high-tech container farm program, which started in 2018.
Currently, the company has four of these high school ranches in Eastern Kentucky, including Breathitt High School, Shelby Valley High School, and Rowan County Senior High School. The farms are located in shipping containers where students can grow leafy vegetables.
According to AppHarvest, each container farm can grow up to 4,608 seedlings and 8,800 mature plants at a time using 440 vertical crop columns. The containers use LED lighting and closed irrigation systems.
Educators from several schools in two Eastern Kentucky counties will have access to additional resources thanks to funding from one local organization.
As part of the Excellence in Education grant program, the Southeast Kentucky Chamber of Commerce recently awarded $5,000 to three Pike County schools and one in Magoffin County.
Each school received $1,250 to use for certain projects.
In Pike County, Dorton Elementary School used the funding to provide students with eBooks so they can read remotely. Officials at Mullins Elementary School used their allotment to buy computers for students to learn remotely. Educators at Shelby Valley High School bought tools and materials to help students with advanced placement math classes.
