One organ donor can save up to eight lives.
According to the Health Resources and Services Administration’s website, organdonor.gov, as of February 2021, 107,000 individuals are on the national transplant waiting list.
In Kentucky, 345 individuals received lifesaving organs in 2020, and 943 remain on the waiting list to receive organs, said the Executive Director of Trust for Life, Shelley Snyder.
Although there are over 2 million donors registered in Kentucky alone, according to the Donate Life Kentucky website, only 3 in 1,000 people die in a way that allows for organ donation.
To become a donor, the person has to die in a specific way which would allow the organs to be viable. According to the Health Resources and Services Administration’s website, donors usually die as the result of illness or accident that leads to brain death.

Despite a global pandemic, Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates has once again broken their record of saving and enhancing lives facilitating over 1,000 heroic organ, tissue, and cornea donors in 2020.
The nonprofit organ procurement organization and their hardworking staff supported more donor families’ decisions than ever before 178 deceased organ donors resulted in 535 organs being transplanted, which translates to over 500 lives saved, and 575 tissue donors generously healed thousands of lives with their gifts. This marks a 30% increase from 2019, which combines a 30% increase in recent years. Nationally there was a 6% increase in deceased organ donation.
Julie Bergin, KODA President, and CEO explained, “Due to the generosity of donor families and more people having joined donor registries in recent years, more lives have been saved and healed.”

OGDEN, Utah â In the back corner of the lot where Nationwide Monument used to sit, was something Shelley Snyder had been waiting on for about four months.
It was her fatherâs headstone. Last month, we told you how Byron Sessionâs Jr., Snyderâs dad, died in September at age 76.
His family buried him at the Bountiful City Cemetery without the headstone he designed and paid for years earlier. The stone was sitting at Nationwide Monument.
