Sudbury health officials ask city council to help find location for supervised consumption site

The volunteer-run Sudbury Temporary Overdose Prevention Society (STOPS) had been operating in the parking lot of the YMCA downtown. The Sudbury Temporary Overdose Prevention Society began operating an unsanctioned supervised consumption site in 2019. The volunteer run group has operated on and off since then, in several locations. (Kate Rutherford/CBC) During Tuesday s council meeting, Coun. Robert Kirwan asked if the city could  turn a blind eye to unsupervised sites, and allow them to continue to operate until a permanent site has been secured and set up. Medical officer of health Dr. Penny Sutcliffe said it is possible to apply to the federal government for an exemption based on an urgent public health need. While it would not provide funding, it would allow such a site to operate.

Coroner s report suggests Northern Ontario cities bearing brunt of opioid overdose deaths

Frankly, this is a health care issue,   Provenzano said. And the health care that people badly need is not available for them It simply has to be addressed and we can t take any more time to address it or we ll lose more lives unnecessarily. Compounding the problem of having a deadly opioid circulating in communities, is the outdated infrastructure that health teams need to deal with underlying issues. The reality of my community and many communities in northern Ontario, is that the health care infrastructure does not exist and is not being invested in by our other levels of government, he said.
