Up to half the bench tops made in New Zealand are made from engineered stone, but the health risks from exposure to silica dust are coming home to roost.
The big slab of Carrara marble in Fabio Valle’s Christchurch living room is a monument to his country of birth and the stone masonry job he abandoned to protect his health. In late 2019 a CT scan showed the 33-year-old former ultra-marathon runner had nodules on his lung, and four months ago he became a real estate agent. “It was a shock. I was quite fit, and I never had any issues with my breathing.”

Chelsey Mathieson of Vekart, Tauranga has won the 2020 NKBA People’s Choice Kitchen Design Award, announced on February 24. This is in addition to winning the 2020 NKBA Excellence in Design Supreme Kitchen Design Award.
The kitchen that took out the Supreme Kitchen Design Award in the 2020 national NKBA awards has also proved to be the favourite with the public. Chelsey Mathieseon of Vekart’s kitchen in a new Tauranga house on the beachfront received thousands of votes to win the 2020 NKBA People’s Choice Kitchen Award sponsored by Kitchen Things. Mathieson’s kitchen was inspired by the location – it has a calm, luxurious, yet relaxed vibe with natural materials and texture. Matarazzo marble was selected as the centrepiece of the project, fulfilling the vision of the kitchen being a piece of art in the home.
Suzie Rees, who lives in Caerphilly, wanted to do guided tours of the town but a foot injury meant this was not possible, so she looked to other ways of providing the experience. She hopes it will provide something fun and interesting for tourists and benefit businesses across the town. She turned her hobby of storytelling and passion for history into a business after funding cuts led to her administration job finishing.
