Health time bomb ticks in Centenary - Zimbabwe Situation

Health time bomb ticks in Centenary BY WINSTONE ANTONIO A HEALTH time bomb is ticking away in Centenary’s Hillside area in Mashonaland Central province, where residents have gone for 10 years without clean, potable water, forcing them to draw water from open wells or queue at the town’s only borehole. They said the only borehole in the area had become a potential spreader of the COVID-19 virus as people queued for hours on end in search of water without observing social distancing protocols. “We are afraid of succumbing to diarrhoea due to the water crisis.  It exposes us to water-borne diseases like cholera. Residents Group, Mutare Council Row Over Rate Increase

By Staff Reporter A GROUP representing the affairs of Mutare residents and ratepayers is up in arms with authorities in the eastern border city for unilaterally hiking rates by more than 300 percent when residents were struggling to survive a tough economic period which has further been worsened by the effects of the Covid-19 induced lockdown. The rate increase, according to the city, was an attempt to cushion the local authority against inflation and high cost of service delivery. The new tariff regime saw most residents in high-density areas pay over ZWL$5 000 for service charges per month, an amount they say was obscene considering the state of the economy.

‘Water woes man-made’  A TRIP around the eastern suburbs in Bulawayo leaves one wondering if people still depend on council water. Almost every house has a water tank and at the gate it is inscribed boldly that “borehole water here”. It appears that residents in these affluent suburbs have long given up on council and have resorted to drilling boreholes and artificial water harvesting. Well, good for them who are privileged enough to drill boreholes and install tanks to store water. The “water crisis” in the city is something they hear of from the media. Do they really care about the water shedding regime put by the Bulawayo City Council (BCC)?
