During his 22 years of higher education experience, Dr. Cruz has used his expertise to increase educational opportunities, enhance the student experience and bolster student success. Prior to joining St. Louis Community College, Dr. Cruz worked at several community colleges and universities, including Sinclair Community College, Cincinnati State Technical and Community College, Broward College, Kaplan University, and Florida International University. The first students to ever receive bachelor s degrees from Cincinnati State Technical and Community College will graduate this spring through the college s land surveying program, officials said.
Like other Ohio community colleges, Cincinnati State has awarded two-year associate degrees and certificates only since 1969. But in 2018, the Ohio Department of Higher Education announced two-year institutions could propose applied bachelor s degree programs to the state chancellor. The proposals must be in fields where there is a strong workforce need, and no nearby four year college with a similar program.
Cincinnati State was of the first community colleges to apply, requesting bachelor s degrees in land surveying and in culinary and food science. Both proposals have since been approved, and officials say the first culinary and food science bachelor s degrees will be awarded in spring 2023.
