SunStar February 03, 2021 I WAS going to write about what Hong Kong residents fleeing from Beijing’s “draconian” policies could expect once they got to their place of sanctuary.
I mean, I still find it hard to believe that they would rather be in a foreign land, where residents would look at them differently, where they would stand out because of the color of their skin, because of the shape of their eyes and because of the way they speak English. And all for what? Because they couldn’t live without the values their colonial masters had instilled when they were young?

+ January 26, 2021 THIS issue might be water under the bridge as President Rodrigo Duterte has repudiated the decision of the Inter-agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) allowing children 10 years old and above in places under modified general community quarantine (MGCQ), citing the new United Kingdom (UK) variant that infected some children in Bontoc, Mountain Province. But, still, I am writing this for the sake of academic discussion as this might be brought up again in the near future amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
Supposedly, effective this Feb. 1, persons aged 10 to 65 will be allowed to go out of their houses in areas under MGCQ. This, after the IATF approved the recommendation to relax the age-based restrictions for areas placed under MGCQ. The entire island of Cebu, including its independent and highly urbanized cities, is under MGCQ.
January 21, 2021 LAST December 23, 2020, Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella had to quell the rumor that he was hospitalized and in a coma. He underwent gallbladder surgery three months earlier, on September 3, but since then, the mayor said, he had not been admitted to the hospital, except for wound-dressing and other post-operation consultation. Not true, kalooy sa Ginoo.
That si mayor na-coma rumor broke out again, saying Labella was admitted into Cebu Doctors Hospital. During the City Council session Wednesday afternoon, January 20 which included at the ceremony conferring on retired general Melquiades Feliciano and his wife Mia as Cebu City s adopted couple Vice Mayor Mike Rama introduced himself to his colleagues as acting mayor and Councilor Dondon Hontiveros as acting vice mayor. The mayor, Mike said, was on medical leave ( for personal medical reason ). Not one of the councilors, known for being candid and inquisitive, asked Mike for details.
