New Life drive-in movie theater opens for second season In the midst of the pandemic, New Life Church found a second life. Last summer, the Petersburg church turned nine acres of its Summerfield Rd. property into a drive-in movie theater. Tonight, New Life opens its second movie season. “We are blessed to have expansive grounds that we have been able to use for a lot of fantastic family events over the years. It was not difficult to create the drive-in movie set-up, said Pastor Joshua Ellis. It did require a hefty investment in the gear to make a truly excellent experience. But we love investing in community events and opportunities for families to connect, so it was well worth it.

About 40 students, from kindergartners to eighth-graders, celebrated National Bike to School Day by riding their bikes to school. It was a success. The kids had so much fun, said Tammy Schmidt, mom of a fifth-grade student. According to national organizers, Bike to School Day “celebrates the joy of active commuting while building a sense of community and school spirit.” Holy Ghost students from five classrooms set out from five starting points. The routes were about a mile from school.

MCCC hosts Faces of Islam discussion Ahmad Deed espoused differences, denounced myths and shared history during “Faces of Islam: The Diversity of Muslim Civilization.” Deed s Zoom presentation was hosted Wednesday by Monroe County Community College and was part of the college’s observation of Arab American Heritage Month. About 20 community members logged-in. Deed, a native of Orlando, Fla., now lives in Toledo and is imam and director of religious affairs at the Islamic Center of Greater Toledo. He’s Muslim, Syrian and an Arab. Deed s central message was that God created differences, and diversity must be respected. “It is an actual imperative that we get to know one other that is the best way we honor diversity in America. From the ethos of the divine eternity, God wants differences. We are enriched by the differences that each of us has,” said Deed. “We want to report that difference is a threat. MCCC hosts virtual climate change program The environment is changing. The planet is warming. Humans’ focus should be on adapting. “The wheels are already in motion. Climate change is occurring. We have to be resilient and adapt to it,” said Dr. Kevin Cooper, dean of science and mathematics at Monroe County Community College. On Monday night, in honor of Earth Day, which is Thursday, Dr. Cooper presented the virtual program “Climate Change: Nothing but the Facts, Stats and Forecasts.” The program was offered by MCCC. For an hour, Dr. Cooper spoke to about 30 participants on Zoom. Dr. Cooper has a doctoral degree in atmospheric environmental science and bachelor’s and master’s degrees in meteorology. He studied in Rapid City, S.D, so he could be at the center of extreme weather conditions, like droughts and blizzards.
