The Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre is welcoming a new Chief of Staff.
SLMHC’s Board of Directors and Senior Executive welcome Dr. Laurel Laakso to the role of Interim Chief of Staff starting in May.
“Dr. Laakso is committed to the mission, vision and values of SLMHC, and in particular to the pursuit of excellence in health care for First Nations and northern Ontario communities in order to see improved wholeness, health and healing for the region,” said President and CEO of SLMHC Heather Lee.
Dr. Laakso is a family physician who has worked in Sioux Lookout since 2018.

As Ontario grapples with the third wave of COVID-19, hospitals across the province are being ordered to cancel all non-urgent surgeries.
This is to open up space in intensive care units (ICU) across the province as a record number of patients are being admitted to ICUs.
According to the province, there are currently 2,350 Ontarians that are hospitalized with COVID-19, 806 patients in the ICU with a COVID-related illness, and 588 in ICU on a ventilator due to COVID-related illness.
As health officials work to transfer ICU COVID-19 patients from hospitals in southern Ontario to hospitals across the province, Ray Racette, President and Chief Executive Officer at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital says he doesn t expect any patients to be transferred to Kenora.

New restrictions go into effect 9 p.m. this evening, Friday March 12.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday reiterated his pledge that every Canadian who wants to get a COVID-19 vaccine will get one by the end September, just as a new poll shows growing dissatisfaction with his government’s handling of the vaccine rollout.
Speaking at his regular COVID-19 briefing in Ottawa, Trudeau said he has been assured by Pfizer that the pharmaceutical giant will fulfil its promise to deliver four million doses of its Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine by the end of March.
Furthermore, Pfizer will accelerate the delivery of its vaccine to Canada and ship a further 10.8 million doses ahead of schedule between April and June, and all of the remaining doses of Canada’s 40-million total order by the end of September, Trudeau said.
