Oregon wildfires triple this spring due to dry conditions across state

The number of small wildfires has tripled this season due partly to dry conditions across Oregon, and anyone planning to burn debris in their backyard needs to be prepared, the Oregon Department of Forestry said Tuesday.  The agency said they ve already had to douse 70 fires that burned 402 acres this spring, almost half of which resulted from escaped backyard debris burn piles. A normal season usually sees about 24 fires burning 225 acres by April 13.  In response, and with more dry weather incoming, the City of Salem issued a ban on all open burning within the city, including recreational fires.  This ban is based on weather conditions and community fire safety needs, and will remain in effect through this week, the city said in a news release.
