Jacob Rees-Mogg wades into Aberdeen Council s plan to bypass Holyrood

Jacob Rees-Mogg says failures of the SNP have driven Aberdeen councillors away JACOB Rees-Mogg has waded into Aberdeen City Council’s efforts to bypass the Scottish Parliament and get funding directly from Westminster. This week councillors at the administration voted by 22 to 19 to write to Scottish Secretary Alister Jack requesting money is sent directly to them. They also voted to approach the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (Cosla) to tell them they’d like to receive any granted without it first going through Edinburgh. The council, co-led by Tory Douglas Lumsden and former Labour representative Jenny Laing, has been accused of planning a “massive attack on devolution”.

Aberdeen Council votes to bypass Holyrood and ask UK Government for funds

Aberdeen council has voted to ask the UK Government for direct funding. ABERDEEN council has voted to write to the UK Government to ask for direct funding, bypassing Holyrood and the devolution settlement. The motion passed in a council meeting last night by 22 votes to 19. The vote ruled that chief executive Angela Scott should write to Scottish Secretary Alister Jack for grant funding. Scott will also approach the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (Cosla) to stress that Aberdeen council would prefer any granted money to bypass Edinburgh. Aberdeen’s council is co-led by the Conservative Douglas Lumsden and former Labour councillor Jenny Laing. Labour suspended nine of the city’s councillors from the party after they formed a coalition with the Tories, meaning Laing now sits as an independent.
