DC Got More Than Enough Snow to Make Some Excellent Snowpeople

This weekend’s big storm wasn’t the blockbuster many had hoped for, but in a region that’s barely seen any snow for a couple years, two to four inches was enough for a snowball fight, and definitely sufficient to make a decent snow humanoid. Here are some of the snowfolks we spotted on social media. We were going for the biggest snowman in DC. @capitalweatherpic.twitter.com/NIzWygjkjW We had some cool visitors on the National Mall today to check out the fresh snow #WashingtonDCpic.twitter.com/y9wXBtvZCr Related:

A Waffle House in DC? There s a Petition

Photograph by SeanPavonePhoto, via iStock. A petition to bring Waffle House to the District of Columbia is more than a third of a way to its goal. Put slightly less optimistically, the petition’s author hopes for 100 signatures, and there are 37 so far.  The petition blames “big pancake lobbyists” for keeping a location of “America’s favorite diner” outside the nation’s capital. DC exists in something of a Waffle House hole: The closest location is in Dumfries, Virginia, near Prince William Forest Park and about a 40-minute drive from downtown if traffic isn’t too bad. But the chain, a Southern institution known for customizable hash browns and excellent disaster planning, has plenty of restaurants north of the city: Frederick, Maryland, is something of a mecca, with three Waffle Houses within an easy drive.

Some of the Names in the Rumor Mill for Washington Post Editor—And Some of the Factors that Might Decide Who Gets the Job

The news that Washington Post Executive Editor Marty Baron would retire at the end of February was greeted with the most sustained outpouring of encomia since Philip Rivers hung up his cleats a week earlier. Baron, the Post‘s boss since 2013, was credited with reviving the storied paper after years of declining morale and finances, was called “fearless” more often than William Wallace, and was even played by Liev Schreiber in an Oscar-winning movie. The backward-looking hosannahs hadn’t even stopped though, before the much juicier and much more journalistically iffy forward-looking phase had begun: The guessing game over Baron’s successor. Of course, as with any high-profile job hunt in a gossipy environment like a media organization, the people engaged in the speculation (a nearly 1,000-person newsroom full of folks who are professionally trained to sniff out rumors) are not the ones who actually get to pick (that would be

Tom Friedman Says He Knows Larry Hogan Is Governor of Maryland

Share Friedman speaks at the Brookings Institution in 2016. Photo by Paul Morigi, via Brookings Flickr. New York Times columnist Thomas L. Friedman confused a lot of people on Twitter with a pair of tweets about Maryland’s vaccine program. Does anyone have any idea where 65-year-olds and older can get vaccinated against Covid in Maryland? They opened the category today and told people NOTHING about where to go. None of this would be happening if @GovLarryHogan were governor. This is impeachable incompetence. Hogan, is of course, still the governor of Maryland, the kind of thing one might expect a very well-informed resident of Montgomery County like Friedman might know. Asked about it, Friedman replied in an email to

Martin Baron Announces He ll Retire as Washington Post s Top Editor in February

Baron in 2013, when he took over at the Post. Photograph by Andrew Propp. Washington Post Executive Editor Martin Baron told staffers on Tuesday that he will retire at the end of February. “At age 66, I feel ready to move on,” he says. Baron came to the Post in January 2013 from the Boston Globe at a time of great financial distress and hampered ambition at the paper, bringing with him a reputation as a “scrupulous and efficient budget-slicer,” as Post columnist Erik Wemple wrote at the time, who had nonetheless lead the paper to a thundering expose of how the Catholic Church covered up sex abuse. That feat (the spectacular reporting, not so much the budget cuts) was the subject of the Academy Award-winning 2015 film
