READERS LETTERS: National crusade to address mental health pandemic

Abertay students put lockdown signs in their windows at Parker House, Dundee, during an outbreak. Sir, – As a coalition of leading providers of care and support to vulnerable children and young people, we echo the call by the Scottish Association for Mental Health in its manifesto for the Scottish Parliament elections for “radical action” to combat a growing mental health crisis. We have for some time raised concerns over a potential lost generation of vulnerable children and young people, whose mental health is being impacted even further by the pandemic. It should however be highlighted that prior to the pandemic, cases of poor mental health were at unprecedented levels and there are a growing number of vulnerable children who cannot access services.

Letters, January 22 2021 - Campbeltown Courier

Campbeltown Courier Want to read more? At the start of the pandemic in March we took the decision to make online access to our news free of charge by taking down our paywall. At a time where accurate information about Covid-19 was vital to our community, this was the right decision – even though it meant a drop in our income. In order to help safeguard the future of our journalism, the time has now come to reinstate our paywall. However,  To access all other news will require a subscription, as it did pre-pandemic. The good news is that for the whole of December we will be running a special discounted offer to get 3 months access for the price of one month. Thank you for supporting us during this incredibly challenging time.

Readers Letters: Mental health of kids harmed

By Readers Letters © Shutterstock / fizkes As children and young people return to homeschooling due to the new lockdown, there is no doubt this will have a continued detrimental impact on mental health and wellbeing. As a coalition, we applaud the Scottish Government’s greater investment in mental health services. However, a view we share with other organisations is that this investment is simply not sufficient. Mental health services were already under immense strain prior to Covid-19, with children waiting considerable lengths of time for support. Recent statistics from December, for example, point to the fact that more than 1,000 children have been waiting over a year for treatment.

Letters: Forced to give up on vaccination after hours of queuing in the cold

13 January 2021 • 12:01am Mavis, 87, is pushed by her daughter out of the Covid-19 vaccination centre at ExCel London, home to the London Nightingale Hospital Credit:  DANIEL LEAL-OLIVAS/AFP SIR – My 90-year-old aunt experienced total chaos on Monday morning when attending her appointment for a Covid-19 vaccination at the new Epsom Downs Racecourse vaccination hub. Her appointment was for 10.05am. On arrival, she joined a queue of cars, where she remained for four hours, waiting to be processed. She was then told she could leave the car and join a walking queue in the freezing cold, which snaked around the buildings. Five hours after arriving, my aunt gave up, along with many other elderly people in the queue, and returned home without being vaccinated.
