Something went wrong - please try again later. Sign Up The UK’s largest shooting organisation has called for the creation of a Scottish gamekeeping taskforce. The British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC) made the plea in its manifesto ahead of the Holyrood elections next month. It said a gamekeeping taskforce was needed to address “worrying trends” highlighted in research by Scotland’s Rural College on behalf of the Scottish Government. The research found almost two thirds of gamekeepers had experienced abuse and 80% said they felt less optimistic about their future. Anti-shooting campaigns, a negative portrayal of the shooting sector in the public domain and a lack of government support were cited as possible drivers for the pessimism within the sector.

Rural thieves raise the stakes this lambing season

NFU Mutual has warned that persistent farm quad bike thieves threaten critical lambing season RURAL THIEVES are targeting higher specification quads, prompting the launch of new tracker and immobilisation initiatives. Although the number of quads stolen in 2020 fell, NFU Mutual reported that more large off-road vehicles were taken, which can cost two or three times as much as a quad bike. These vehicles now represent 14% of all quad and ATV thefts, compared to 11% in 2019. To help farmers protect their quads from increasingly sophisticated thieves, the insurer has launched a pilot scheme with manufacturers, starting with Yamaha and Honda, to provide customers with free tracking and immobilisation equipment on vehicles bought to replace stolen quads and ATVS, following a paid claim.
