From next Monday 17 May, the majority of council areas in Scotland will move from level three to level two. Meanwhile, many of the Scottish islands will move to level one. This will apply to the Western Isles, Orkney, Shetland, all islands in the Highland Council area - with the exception of Skye - and the islands in the Argyll and Bute area.

New data from the Scottish Retail Consortium (SRC) shows the number of people visiting shops around the country perked up during April as non-essential retailing got back up and running. SRC has reported a 14.2 percentage point improvement from March 2021, when only essential retailing was allowed.

Figures recorded by the Scottish Retail Consortium and Sensormatic IQ show footfall to Scotland’s shops increased by 14.2% from March. The Scottish Government relaxed coronavirus restrictions to expand the definition of non-essential retail at the beginning of April, and then allowed all stores to welcome back customers from April 26. The statistics show large drops in comparison to the same period before the pandemic, with footfall down 52.1% in April compared to 2019.
