Enhancing avalanche safety through philosophy
Every year, there are approximately 100 avalanche fatalities in Europe alone, with many more people injured in avalanche accidents whilst participating in outdoor sports. In an attempt to enhance safety in avalanche terrain, one Stirling academic has been exploring the role of human decision-making in avalanche accidents, with his findings helping to inform best practice among mountain safety practitioners, professionals and educators around the world.
Decision-making in dangerous territory
Dr Philip Ebert is a Senior Philosophy Lecturer at Stirling and qualified ski leader with many years of experience on the snow. His research on risk, rationality, and reasoning has dovetailed naturally with his passion for outdoor sports – where decision-making in dangerous territory can be a matter of life and death.

The Scottish Avalanche Information Service has released stunning drone footage of one of the biggest avalanches to hit the Cairngorms in recent years.
The snowslide occurred last weekend in one of the range s most popular climbing areas but fortunately happened overnight.
The avalanche in Coire an Lochain in the northern Cairngorms was released naturally on either February 19 or 20. No-one was caught-up in it.

The Scottish Avalanche Information Service (SAIS) is about half way through its latest season.
For a second year, the service s team of forecasters are working under Covid-19 lockdown restrictions.

The team s assessments of potential avalanche hazard in six mountain areas are for use by people permitted to visit the hills in line with Scottish government travel rules, and if they are needed in the event of an emergency by search and rescue teams.
SAIS provides forecasts for Lochaber, Glen Coe, Northern and Southern Cairngorms Creag Meagaidh and Torridon from mid-December to mid-April.

A Scottish mountain rescue team has warned walkers and hikers of an extreme avalanche risk in the hills around Edinburgh. The Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue Team (TVMRT) shared an alarming photograph of a huge crack in the snow at the Pentland Hills, which is they say is a red flag .
