A Highland anti-wind farm campaigner is disappointed in the results of a poll that showed only a slender majority in favour of halting further developments in the region. Brenda Herrick says that the £73 million paid out to wind farm operators in Caithness and Sutherland since the system of constraints payments began in 2010 shows that there is no need for further turbines in the area.

However, trade body Scottish Renewables say that Save Our Hills’ suggestion that rural communities don’t broadly back onshore windfarms is “simply incorrect.” Dumfriesshire-based Save Our Hills say members will move to focus efforts to up local scrutiny in Aberdeenshire and Perth and Kinross, where windfarm projects such as Green Burn near Alyth and Dulater windfarm near Dunkeld have sparked objections in recent years.

The Scottish government will publish a hydrogen action plan next year that will be supported by £100m in investment over the next five years to support its delivery. A policy statement issued today confirmed the government will support the growth of renewable and low-carbon hydrogen in Scotland with a 5GW target by 2030 and at least 25GW by 2045. It said 5GW would be enough to power the equivalent of 1.8 million homes. The statement can be found here. Scottish Energy Minister Paul Wheelhouse said: “We are the first country in the UK to publish a Hydrogen Policy Statement that sets out how we can make the most of Scotland’s massive potential in this new sector.
