Nine years on from a history-making arrival in the island eyrie of an Angus loch, a far-travelled osprey has raised hopes he could be the new dynasty maker in his natal nest. Blue YD has been a constant source of interest and intrigue for visitors to Balgavies Loch, near Forfar since the coloured ring bearing the initials was attached to his left leg in the summer of 2012.   Tracking A satellite tag was also attached to the fledgling in the tricky operation to scale the nest at the Scottish Wildlife Trust reserve.

AI used to tackle climate emergency with incredible satellite maps of Scotland

Scotland’s first ever nationwide high-resolution habitat map has been launched. It s hoped the satellite images can provide insight into how the country’s landscapes are changing over time, while examining the potential of artificial intellicence to make positive change for the environment. The maps were developed by collecting over 500,000 data samples across Scotland for 22 types of landcover, before AI was used to analyse tens of thousands of satellite images from a range of different sensors.  The end product, which has been in the making since early last year, is aimed at helping landowners and policy makers with their land-use decision making, including working out where to restore habitats.
