Scots told to cut meat consumption to help SNP hit climate targets

SNP ministers have been accused of “environmental vandalism” for failing to prepare farmers for the climate emergency – after government advisers called for Scots to cut the amount of meat and dairy products consumed. The Climate Change Committee (CCC) has warned politicians that in order to hit stark climate change targets, the average amount of meat consumed should be cut by 20% - despite pledges from the Scottish Government to expand the food and drink sector while UK meat consumption actually increased by 3% between 2015 and 2019. The CCC alert for “a significant shift in behaviours” comes as Scotland’s Climate Assembly urged MSPs to tax carbon intensive food and roll out a carbon labelling scheme for products, similar to the nutritional traffic lights, within five years.

Climate Assembly report hailed as clarion call for action

Climate Assembly report hailed as ‘clarion call’ for action Frequent flier schemes should be scrapped, the Climate Assembly suggested (Chris Radburn/PA) A new report containing more than 80 recommendations on how Scotland should tackle climate change has been hailed as a “clarion call” for action. Scotland’s Climate Assembly is demanding action to reduce emissions across a whole range of areas – with calls for a ban on single use plastics “unless there is no viable alternative”. To encourage people out of their cars, it calls for public transport to be made “cheaper, or free”, with standardised smart ticketing introduced across the whole country in what it said could be an “Oyster card for Scotland”.
