East Lothian Scottish Parliament candidates campaign, week two One of Euan Davidson, Craig Hoy, Martin Whitfield and Paul McLennan will become East Lothian s next MSP next month THE countdown is on to elect East Lothian s next MSP. Iain Gray (Labour) has stepped down after more than a decade in the role, with East Lothian residents electing their new representative next month. Four candidates - Euan Davidson (Liberal Democrats), Craig Hoy (Conservatives), Paul McLennan (SNP) and Martin Whitfield (Labour) - are in the running for the role. Each week, the  East Lothian Courier will give each of the candidates the chance to speak about what they ve been up to and why you should vote for them.

SNP pledge to put £275 million into Scottish high street recovery

THE SNP has pledged to help Scotland’s high streets, with a promise of cash being spent to encourage Scots to shop locally and support retail businesses that have been hit hard by the pandemic. The SNP announced if it wins the next Scottish Parliament election it will spend £275 million over the next five years on community regeneration and help to revitalise town centres. First Minister Nicola Sturgeon also promised there would be £10m for the Scotland Loves Local campaign to encourage people to shop in their own area wherever they can. The commitments come after the Scottish Government extended the 100% rates rebate given to key sectors hardest hit by coronavirus – including retail and hospitality – to 2021-22 at a cost of £719m.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon NICOLA Sturgeon will today set out the SNP’s business pandemic recovery blueprint by giving high streets a new lease of life. The First Minister will outline proposals to create 20-minute neighbourhoods - where people can pick up all they need within a walkable area. Speaking on a visit to a local business in Glasgow today, the First Minister will outline a package of measures to support businesses to recover from the Covid-19 crisis. The plan will include 100% non-domestic rates relief for retail, hospitality, leisure and aviation sectors this year, with an investment of £719 million. The SNP will also pledge £275 million over the life of the parliament to support community-led regeneration and town centre revitalisation as well as steps to support the development of 20-minute neighbourhoods.
