A school board meeting in Scottsdale on May 18 had to end when board members became upset with attendees who did not wear masks.

Scottsdale Unified School District board meeting came to an abrupt end on the night of May 18 after board members became upset with attendees who refused to wear masks. It is moved and seconded that the Governing Board recess, said Scottsdale Unified School District Board President Jann-Michael Greenburg, to screams and chants of new board, during the May 18 meeting.

Many of the teachers in Gilbert Public Schools who were told they were being laid off in March are now being offered a contract to work in the district next year.
Gilbert Public Schools laid off 152 teachers citing a decline in enrollment during the pandemic. However, districts around the Valley are continuing to hunt for teachers.

A Scottsdale Unified School District governing board meeting was cut short on Tuesday night after attendees refused to wear masks despite district rules.
The packed meeting started with a heated disagreement over mask use, with school board President Jann-Michael Greenburg asking parents and attendees to put their masks on or go to an overflow room where they would be able to watch the meeting in a socially distanced manner.
About six minutes after the meeting started, with board members not getting a chance to move forward with agenda items due to the commotion, the board went into recess for the first time. Following eight minutes of interruption, there was a second recess and, ultimately, the board canceled the meeting.
