An Encinitas man, described by friends as someone who would give a stranger the shirt off his back, died while trying to help a stranded driver.
Kevin Buckmaster, 49, stopped along Encinitas Boulevard at about 8 a.m. Saturday to help two strangers put gas into their car.
When Buckmaster crossed the street after helping the driver, he was hit by another car traveling eastbound, according to San Diego County sheriff s deputies. Emergency crews took Buckmaster to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla but he died shortly after. The driver of the car that hit Buckmaster was also an Encinitas resident and was not injured in the crash.

Mira Gowda and her sister Bela, local students at The Bishop’s School, are running Operation Nourish to support healthcare workers through their fight against COVID-19. The Rancho Santa Fe sisters raise funds to provide high-quality meals, supplied at or below cost by local restaurants, to healthcare workers at hospitals. Since March 2020, they have provided nearly 1,000 meals.
“Our mission has two parts: first, we support local restaurants who have been affected by the pandemic by buying meals from them in bulk…and then we serve them to healthcare workers in locations that have been exceptionally hard-hit by COVID-19 cases,” said Mira.
“I think the rate of increase of COVID-19 patients is certainly reminiscent of that (March),” said Dr. Eisman.
More people are becoming infected with COVID-19 and some are being hospitalized, like Ana Novello. She’s a mother of three and has been fighting COVID-19 in the hospital for more than 15 days.
“So many people die because of this,” said Novello, as she warned about the severity of the disease.
While some are fighting the virus, others are fighting to keep their business alive after being ordered to shutdown yet again.
“It’s all we have,” said Federica Penn, co-owner of Operacaffe in the Gaslamp Quarter.
