Uncharted territory : Atmospheric CO2 hits highest concentration ever recorded

‘Uncharted territory’: Atmospheric CO2 hits highest concentration ever recorded By Meteorologist Stephanie Weaver Biden signs executive orders on climate change President Joe Biden signed executive orders aimed at cutting U.S. oil, gas and coal emissions and doubling energy production from offshore wind turbines. WAIMEA, Hawaii - The Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii measured carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere and found the highest concentration ever recorded on April 3. Researchers measured the average atmospheric carbon dioxide to be 421.21 parts per million, which means that humans have reached the halfway point to doubling pre-industrial levels of CO2. This work shows that CO2 is continuing to build up in the atmosphere. The COVID situation didn t make a marked change in the buildup, nor would we have expected a big impact, Ralph Keeling, a professor at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego told FOX Television Stations.

Atmospheric CO2 Hits the Highest Concentration Ever Recorded ByAubrey Patti Published on 4/9/2021 at 9:28 AM On April 3, the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii measured average atmospheric carbon dioxide to be 421.21 parts per million. This is the first time in human history that CO2 concentration has exceeded 420 ppm, which means that humans have reached the halfway point of doubling pre-industrial CO2 levels. Doubling pre-industrial CO2 levels has a 95% chance of warming the planet by at least 2 degrees Celsius, according to a study published last year by the journal Reviews of Geophysics. Scientists believe that beyond this threshold, climate change will lead to disastrous sea level rise and other extreme weather events.

Carbon dioxide reached a high in 2020 that hasn t been recorded since in 3 6 MILLION years ago

Carbon dioxide levels saw a surge in 2020 to the highest since the mid-Pliocene era 3.6 million years ago. During this prehistoric time period, sea level was about 78 feet higher and the Earth s temperature was about 7 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than our modern-day world. The year-over-year rise in CO2, 2.6 parts per million, is one of the highest recorded since NOAA started tracking more than 60 years ago.  The agency didn t offer an explanation for the increase, but its possible the effect was cumulative.  In addition, electricity usage in the residential sector actually increased during lockdown. Since 2000, atmospheric CO2 has risen about 12 percent and atmospheric methane has increased six percent.
