COLUMBIA, S.C. The South Carolina Senate has unanimously approved the governor’s nomination of a nearly lifelong member of the Highway Patrol to lead the state Department of Public Safety.
Robert Woods IV can now take interim off his title as he runs the agency that oversees the Highway Patrol and Statehouse security.
Woods has been doing the job for about a year after the previous nominee withdrew. By December, the governor convinced Woods to seek the job on a more permanent basis.
Woods has worked for the agency for 29 years, except for a brief stint as a Charleston police officer early in his career, rising to a major overseeing the Highway Patrol’s administration.

Feb. 8 UPDATE: As of about 9:35 a.m., the crash on S.C. 170 has been cleared, and all lanes are open.
A crash on S.C. 170 in Okatie near Argent Boulevard has shut down lanes of traffic on Monday morning as emergency officials work to clear the crash.
S.C. Highway Patrol received the call for the crash at 8:15 a.m., according to the S.C. Department of Public Safety traffic dashboard.
All westbound lanes are blocked off, according to a traffic alert.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - Law enforcement and other public officials want to assure South Carolinians there are safety measures in place ahead of President-elect Joe Bidenâs inauguration on January 20.
The FBI has warned of the potential for armed protests at all 50 statehouses, as well as the U.S. Capitol. State officials say the South Carolina State House and the surrounding area are secure.

But the building is being closed Saturday through Wednesday’s presidential inauguration “out of an abundance of caution,” the state Public Safety Department said Friday in a joint statement with Columbia Police, Richland County deputies and the State Law Enforcement Division.Officers are putting up temporary barriers and signs reminding people weapons are outlawed on Statehouse grounds.
