COLUMBIA, S.C. (WBTV) - South Carolina is set to end its participation in all federal, pandemic-related unemployment benefit programs due to a workforce shortage.
Governor Henry McMaster directed the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce (DEW) to terminate South Carolinaâs participation in these programs, effective June 30, 2021.

As legislative session winds down one week until sine die South Carolina is primed to expand state gun laws.
After a more than 12-hour debate, the Republican-controlled Senate Thursday voted mostly down party lines to pass a House-sponsored bill that would give concealed weapons permit holders the right to carry hand guns in the open.
The bill, which Senate Democrats criticized as a blatant ploy to assuage a minority of Republican voters, now returns to the House, which is likely to reject the Senate s changes, triggering a six-member joint panel to hammer out the differences.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WMBF) â Officials with the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce stress that âre-employment is the best recovery planâ for the state following the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
This comes after Gov. Henry McMasterâs announcement that he was directing state officials to terminate South Carolinaâs involvement in all federal, pandemic-related unemployment benefit programs starting June 30.

According to Ellzey, there are currently 81,684 open positions in the state.
Gov. Henry McMaster has called for the
S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce to terminate all federal pandemic unemployment programs in South Carolina, citing the benefits as cause for the state’s workforce shortage.
McMaster gave the directive May 6 via a letter to DEW Executive Director Dan Ellzey, according to a news release from his office.
In the memo, McMaster stated that the benefits were only meant to be short-term assistance for the “vulnerable and displaced” during the height of the pandemic, but have now “turned into a dangerous federal entitlement, incentivizing and paying workers to stay at home rather than encouraging them to return to the workplace.”

It appears we were overly cynical when we said just an hour ago that we won t be holding our breath to find out if any other state will join Montana in ending many unemployment benefits in response to the unprecedented worker shortage.
Just moments after we published that post, perhaps emboldened by the daring example set by his republicans peers in Montana, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster today became the second state to end the people s addition to government handouts, and directed the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce to terminate South Carolina’s participation in all federal, pandemic-related unemployment benefit programs, effective June 30, 2021.
