Syracuse Mets fall to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in slugfest, 17-11
Updated May 07, 2021;
Offense was plentiful on Thursday night at NBT Bank Stadium, but the Syracuse Mets fell to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, 17-11.
Bruce Maxwell was a triple shy of the cycle for the Mets, collecting five RBIs in the game.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (2-1) struck first in the top of the first inning. A Miguel Andujar single scored Greg Allen from second base for a 1-0 lead.
The RailRiders scored again in the top of the second. With the bases loaded, Andrew Velazquez grounded into a fielder’s choice, scoring Derek Dietrich from third base to make it 2-0. More runs would’ve scored that frame if not for a diving catch made by Mets shortstop Jake Hager on the very next ball that was hit.

The afternoon started with a ribbon cutting ceremony and ended with a fireworks show. Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh, Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon and New York Mets team president Sandy Alderson congratulated one another over the cut red ribbon. Thirteen months ago most Syracuse businesses were shut down to stop the spread of COVID-19. The city closed for 13 months and could no longer host the Mets’ Triple-A minor league team.
COVID-19 shut down the 2020 minor league season and NBT Bank Stadium a $25 million stadium renovation project funded by Alderson and Governor Andrew Cuomo stood still for a year before it even started. Will he ever hit again?
Where do you play him?
Those issues are on Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders manager Doug Davis’ plate.
Introducing Yankees Insider:
Batting second behind rehabbing Yankees first baseman Luke Voit, Andujar was 0-for-4 with two double-play ground balls.
“He’s going to be in the lineup every day,” Davis said. “Obviously, the guy’s got a bat that New York certainly hopes is the same bat that he had when he was second in the running for the American League Rookie of the Year. That bat could really impact that lineup.”
