It’s getting to be that time of the year for incoming freshmen: time to accept your housing contracts and find a roommate. Deciding who you want to eat, sleep, and breathe next to during your freshman year is definitely not an easy task, and Penn State doesn’t offer a roommate survey like some other schools. Freshmen are stuck deciding to use apps like Facebook and TikTok to get in contact with other prospective students or go random. Penn State’s Schreyer Honors College held its 26th Annual Mark Luchinsky Memorial Lecture Monday night titled “Chasing Space: An Astronaut s Story of Grit, Grace, and Second Chances” with Leland Melvin. Melvin — an engineer, educator, scientist, photographer, musician, author, former NASA astronaut and former NFL wide receiver — shared his life story to inspire attendees to have a “growth mindset” and believe they can do anything. The Mark Luchinsky Memorial Lecture Series was endowed by family and friends to honor Luchinsky’s memory through the support of a speaker who “exemplifies intellectual honesty, personal integrity and joy in learning,” according to the Schreyer Honors College website.

Penn State alumni invited to participate in Cooking Classic

Image: Patrick Mansell January 12, 2021 The first Penn State Cooking Classic  a series of hourlong webinars that aim to bring Penn State alumni together to learn cooking and related life skills will be held on Wednesday evenings from Jan. 20 to Feb. 10. The webinar topics will include smoking meats, coffee, healthy foods, specialty chocolate and wine. Cooking Classic programs begin at 7 p.m. ET and include:  Wednesday, Jan. 20 Pierogies, Pies and Pigs: Fresh From the Farm Show   Wednesday, Jan. 27  Cooking with Tech: Wings & Things   Wednesday, Feb. 3  Healthy Hints   Wednesday, Feb. 10  Mallo Cups and Merlot In addition to bringing together Penn State alumni, the webinars are intended to raise awareness of the food insecurity experiences of students across the Penn State system.
