Schenectady school district expects full December state aid payment – but top official says it’s not enough to rehire staff
Schenectady school officials expect to receive December state aid payments in full, but interim Superintendent Aaron Bochniak on Wednesday indicated the district was still not in a position to rehire staff laid off at the start of the year.
The December payments mark positive news, but Bochniak said the uncertainty surrounding how much state aid the district can ultimately count on this year prevented officials from moving forward with large expenditures to hire back staff, add back programs and reopen schools.

Lawyers in a statewide lawsuit over New York education funding are asking the court to grant the Schenectady City School District special relief from threatened state aid cuts, arguing massive layoffs and program cuts imposed under the threat of aid reductions are causing irreparable harm to students.
The lawyers in a motion for preliminary injunction filed early Friday argue that Schenectady students were already deprived an adequate education prior to the pandemic and that budget cuts this year have only exacerbated the daily harm to students.
