He’s been widely dubbed Longford’s marathon man and now Liam Fenelon is fast becoming Longford’s leading philanthropist.
It’s a mantle the affable 79-year-old is in no way keen to self proclaim however, as he focuses all of his efforts into raising much needed funds for St Christopher’s Services.
Part of that drive is borne out by a mix of lockdown fatigue tinged with an insatiable desire to underpin an organisation which remains very much close to his own heart.

€800,000 in funding is to be allocated by the HSE to address historic underfunding at St Christopher’s Services in Longford.
The funding will finally address key elements at the Longford service which has long been underfunded.
Welcoming the news, and as a result of funding, Longford / Westmeath Fianna Fáil TD Joe Flaherty, expressed hope that St Christopher’s Services will now be in a position to engage with the unions and begin to address the issue of non-payment of increments.
Deputy Flaherty commented, “Since 2013 staff at St Christopher’s have not been paid their increments and the service has struggled to retain and recruit staff. Hopefully this additional funding announcement towards other areas of the Service is an opportunity for the service to address this historic failing.

A man charged with having a screwdriver and a metal bar in his car when searched by gardaí has been ordered to pay €350 to St Christopher’s Services by next month.
At a sitting of Longford District Court last week, it was heard that, on March 19, 2020, Ronan Stokes, Corboy, Edgeworthstown, was searched by gardaí and found to be in possession of the items.
Solicitor for the defence, Bríd Mimnagh, explained that her client had been stopped by two gardaí who searched the car, found no issue and let him go.

Two Longford disability facilities run by St Christopher s Services have received high-level passes in recent Health Information and Quality Authority inspections.
The centres located in Longford town were both the subject of short-notice inspections at the beginning of the year. Battery Court and Teach Lamagh both recorded compliant or substantially compliant ratings during the audit.
The battery Court Facility run by St Christopher s Services comprises of 6 resident houses and one staff house near Longford Town.

The centre caters to residents with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities who live independently with staff help.
