th before local students are heading back to the classroom.
The province identified seven public health regions where the COVID situation was stable enough for students to return to in-class learning.
Some students with special needs who, for whatever reason, are unable to manage their classes online, are already back in school for face-to-face learning.
However, John Howitt, Director of Education with the Lambton Kent District School Board, says it will be at least a few weeks before local schools could be cleared.
“We have not been given any specific criteria that would come from the medical side, we would follow the direction from the command table as well as our local Medical Officers of Health,” Howitt says. “The province will not be considering any other openings until that February 10th end of the lockdown.”

Thousands of families across the region are relying on borrowed technology to help with the shift to online learning.
Director of Education Deb Crawford says the St Clair Catholic District School Board has lent out roughly 2200 devices.
“We’re finding there is challenges around rural internet, and that’s making it a little bit uneven,” Crawford says. “But we’ve been able to provide hubs or iPhones or different connections to people who didn’t have internet. So we were ready to go and people are progressing really well. It’s a big adjustment for some families.”
At the Lambton Kent District School Board, Director John Howitt says there are close to 5000 devices on loan, along with 400 internet hubs or similar technology for those who don’t have regular internet access.

Local school boards are fleshing out their plans for after the holidays.
The province has instructed all schools to shift to remote learning for at least the first week back after the winter holidays.
John Howitt with Lambton Kent District School Board says elementary students will mainly use that first week a chance to review and get back into the groove.
“Every day that a student has an opportunity to be in front of a teacher is a day that should not be wasted,” Howitt says. “In our elementary, we’re not going to be moving forward with a lot of new curriculum, it’ll be a lot of review. What a perfect opportunity for students who might have some gaps to reach out and connect.”
