During his Budget speech, Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced the creation of a Treasury branch office in Darlington. Promoting the new office on Twitter, the official Conservative Party account posted an image proudly declaring: Just announced: Treasury North to be set up in: Darlington Unfortunately the grand announcement was laid over an image of York, which is more than 50 miles south of Darlington. The goof was spotted by the Guido Fawkes website - who said Conservative HQ had blamed a stock image website for mis-tagging the picture. The tweet was deleted today, and replaced with an image of Darlington. Mr Johnson said he was descended from bakers in Darlington.
A SCHOOLGIRL who raised money for a charity caring for the homeless has been recognised in Westminster. Sofia Hill collected more than £450 for Edinburgh-based Steps to Hope by selling reindeer food ahead of Christmas. The youngster, aged six and who lives in the Windygoul area of Tranent, then visited St Cuthbert’s Church in Edinburgh with mum Lynsey to hand over the money to the charity. Steps to Hope is a non-profit charity dedicated to caring for the homeless and those suffering with addiction. The Windygoul Primary School pupil’s efforts have now been highlighted by Kenny MacAskill, MP for East Lothian.

Sir: After reading Jonathan Beswick (‘Critical mass’, 16 January) I am writing to express the shame I feel as a lifetime member of the Church of England at our Church’s attitude to this pandemic.
Here was the greatest opportunity in 70 years to demonstrate care for our fellow people, to advertise our faith and love and to keep the Church in the public eye. I hoped that there would be thousands of Church members flocking to help the lonely and the isolated. But I find my local church locked. This was the chance for the Church to show commitment and sacrifice for the good of the community, to cast aside timidity and get on with normal life, as does the postman, the milkman, the parcel delivery brigade, the health service and many others. Why are our priests so timid and frightened? They are supposed to be our leaders and consolers in times of crisis. The very people who believe death holds no fear for them seem afraid to open their own doors, let alone the doors o
