New data suggests fivefold increase in young children swallowing magnets over past 5 years in UK

New data suggests fivefold increase in young children swallowing magnets over past 5 years in UK May 17 2021 There’s been a fivefold rise in the number of young children requiring treatment after having swallowed a magnet over the past 5 years in the UK, suggests data from specialist doctors in a letter published online in the Archives of Disease in Childhood. Nearly half of these children required surgery to remove the magnet, with surgical complications after retrieval a common occurrence. Swallowing ‘foreign bodies’, such as coins and buttons, is common among young children from the age of 6 months onwards as they explore their environment, which is key to their development. Most of these objects pass out of the body naturally without causing any injury.

Four thousand UK volunteers needed for latest COVID-19 vaccine study

Four thousand UK volunteers needed for latest COVID-19 vaccine study Published:   4,000 volunteers are set to be recruited to the latest vaccine study running in the UK, examining a new COVID-19 vaccine candidate. Developed by specialty vaccine company Valneva, the vaccine is being manufactured at the company’s site in Livingston, West Lothian. It is the only inactivated, adjuvanted (an ingredient to create a strong immune response) COVID-19 vaccine in clinical development in Europe. The study will be running across 22 National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) sites in England, and two sites in Scotland, and is open to healthy adults who have not had a previous COVID-19 vaccine.

Mix and match UK Covid vaccine trial expanded

BBC News By Michelle Roberts Published image copyrightGetty Images image captionOver-50s who have had a dose of the Pfizer or AstraZeneca vaccine can take part in a study on mixing jabs A major UK trial looking at whether Covid vaccines can be mixed with different types of jabs used for first and second doses is being expanded. Combining vaccines might give broader, longer-lasting immunity against the virus and new variants of it, and offer more flexibility to vaccine rollout. Adults over 50 who have had a first dose of Pfizer or AstraZeneca can apply to take part in the Com-Cov study.
