Well-respected and successful local musical singer, talented actress and director Elizabeth Simpson has died, aged 82. Whitehaven-born Elizabeth, who, in addition to her acting and singing accomplishments was a retired infant school teacher, died on December 5. She was born into a musical family, as Elizabeth’s father, Alfred Robertson, was the organist and choirmaster of St Nicholas Church, along with musical director for the Whitehaven & District Amateur Operatic Society. Elizabeth made her stage debut for the society aged 16 in the 1955 production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s ‘The Mikado’ playing the leading role of Yum Yum. From then on was a life-long member of the society, performing on stage in musicals and plays, and directing many productions until 2014, when she became the society s president – earning a 60-years medal from the National Operatic & Dramatic Association. She also appeared on stage and directed for a number of other groups around the county
I am a resident here and up until a few weeks ago we were Covid-19 free, what else can I say.
A big thank you to all the staff at the Great Hospital who have gone above and beyond in their care.

Loddon branch of Co-op
My thanks go to all the staff at the Loddon Co-op. They are always well organised and have made us safe as possible. But more importantly the staff are so kind and helpful. Having a shop like this has definitely made life easier for the people of Loddon at this difficult time. I cannot thank them enough for their hard work and cheerfulness.
YOU know it’s Christmas when you see the shepherds. In first century Palestine, shepherds stood on the bottom rung of the social ladder sharing the same status as the collaborating tax collectors. Some interpreters cite the Mishnah, Judaism’s written record of the oral law, as evidence of the lowly status given to these rural dwellers. One passage describes them as “incompetent”; another says no one should ever feel obligated to rescue a shepherd who has fallen into a pit – an unfortunate contrast to the sheep they cared for. But the choice of shepherds reflects how God has a soft spot for those whom the world considers to be unlikely bearers of good news.

Mixing old style with a modern twist is a trend in the automotive world. Mini has based an entire brand on it, and just how many derivations of Fiat 500 are actually reminiscent of the original? Both owe their existence to originals designed to get their respective homelands mobile for cheap, but now cost hefty cash, no matter how you look at it.
