ST. PETERSBURG BEACH, FL â A 70-year-old man was killed and four other people were injured in a hit-and-run in St. Petersburg Beach Thursday night. Pinellas County Sheriff s Office says it happened in the 4700 block of Gulf Boulevard in St. Pete Beach at about 8:45 p.m.
According to investigators, Hiep Huynh, 70, and four other family members were crossing Gulf Boulevard in the crosswalk. They were on the east side of the road and began walking to the west side when a red Nissan Juke exited the public beach parking lot and turned northbound on Gulf Boulevard. The car struck all five pedestrians and drove away heading north.

ST. PETE BEACH, Fla. â For the most part, Carrie Ruckdeschel loves living in St. Pete Beach, on Boca Ciega Drive. She calls it paradise.
âThe community is great,â she said. âI love that we have the school here. That was one of the perks for living here.â
However, there are two very serious issues for just about everyone who lives here: flooding and speeding.
âItâs stressful. Itâs a raceway, for sure,â said Ruckdeschel.
Both of her sons go to Gulf Beaches Elementary Magnet School. They live right down the road, so they ride their bikes every day.
ST. PETE BEACH â The city has been forced to suspend its memorial bench program after it became the victim of its own success and popularity.
Public Works Director Mike Clarke said over the years the program has been so successful that there are now 87 city-approved memorial benches on the beach, mostly in Pass-A-Grille.
âBench spacing on the sand has become quite crowded and, for that reason, the program has been suspended,â Clarke reported. âHowever, Public Works continues to receive requests for consideration. The emotional attachment families have with the beach and loved ones who have passed is very evident.â
During a March 23 commission meeting, City Manager Alex Rey told commissioners that âwhile the city is still getting requests for memorial benches, all the possible places on the beach where a bench can be placed has been saturated.â
