The St Vincent de Paul Society is asking the community to give generously to its Winter Appeal this year, due to a growing list of families across the state suffering financially.
With many still feeling the impacts of COVID-19 and JobSeeker payments being rolled back, the organisation says it’s helping more people on low incomes being ‘priced out’ of secure places to live.
St Vincent de Paul Society NSW CEO Jack de Groot, says more people are asking for help who haven’t had to before.
“Every time the payment has been cut over the past year, the demand for our help has increased to the point that some are in a position worse than pre-COVID-19,” Mr de Groot said.
St Vincent de Paul Society (SA) Inc
The St Vincent de Paul Society (SA) was one of the member organisations of a consortium that unsuccessfully tendered to operate the City-South Homelessness services, as part of the South Australian Housing Authority (SAHA) reform agenda.
As a result, there has been a significant funding cut to the Society’s Vinnies Men’s Crisis Centre in Whitmore Square, which houses close to 50 men each night. Without this funding, the Centre will be unable to operate in its current crisis accommodation form and the organisation is currently considering other service models to maintain its commitment to serving people experiencing homelessness.

A ‘humble’ and ‘generous’ father-of-seven who had the honour of meeting Ghandi and Pope Francis has donated money in his will to a charity he supported for over 70 years. Patrick Fleming, 94, from Burnley, who died on January 11, was known fondly remembered by thousands of Burnley residents as a window cleaner. Patrick left £2,000 in his will to the St Vincent de Paul Society (SVP) for which he volunteered since he was a teenager. Throughout his long life, Patrick had the rare distinction to have met both Mahatma Gandhi during his visit to Lancashire cotton mills in 1931, and Pope Francis during a Mass at the Vatican in 2019 when he talked with the pontiff.
