The Irish Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (IrSPEN) said that diabetes and obesity have emerged as significant underlying risk factors for developing severe illness from Covid-19, and these patients should also be prioritised for continuity of treatment during the pandemic. IrSPEN spokesperson and Obesity Specialist at St Vincent’s University Hospital Professor Carel le Roux said: “Intensive care units (ICUs) are currently filling up with many younger patients who have underlying diabetes and obesity and have contracted Covid-19.

2021 St Patrick s Day parade cancelled for second year in a row due to Covid-19

The St Patrick s Day parade in Belfast has been cancelled for the second year running due to the pandemic. The festival, which is one of the highlights of the year on the city’s cultural programme, involves a massive parade as well as concerts, street music and performances. However, Belfast City Council say that there will be some kind of event to celebrate Ireland s patron saint. Newry, Mourne, and Down District Council say they are also having to rethink St Paddy s Day celebrations, which are held annually in Downpatrick, Saint Patrick’s famous resting place. A Belfast City Council spokesperson told the Belfast Telegraph: Belfast s usual St Patrick s Day Parade and concert will not be going ahead this year due to the ongoing pandemic.
