COVID-19: Bahrain halts class attendance, cafe services

Cairo: Bahrain has decided to suspend classes in public and private schools as well as universities and kindergartens for three weeks starting next Sunday to limit the spread of the novel coronavirus. Remote learning will be relied on  during the three weeks. A state taskforce team in charge of tackling COVID-19 in the kingdom also announced suspending indoor services at restaurants and coffee shops for three weeks beginning January 31 for the same reason. The scale of abidance by all precautionary measures to limit the spread of COVID-19 will be taken into consideration to reopening or closing sectors depending on developments,  the team was quoted by the Bahraini media as saying.

Bahrain: 3,403 domestic workers escape from employers

Dubai: A total of 3,403 domestic workers in Bahrain have escaped from their employers over the course of two years, according to the latest statistics announced by the Labour and Social Development Minister Jameel Humaidan. Replying to a parliamentary question submitted by MP Bassem Al Maliki during the Council of Representatives’ regular weekly session, the minister did not clarify whether the number of domestic workers escaping from employers is increasing or decreasing compared to previous years, Al Ayam newspaper reported. According to the minister, out of the total complaints received by the ministry, 550 were settled amicably by rectifying the status of the runaway workers, while 257 have been dropped by the employers.

COVID-19: Bahrain ends free renewal of visit visas

Cairo: Bahrain has halted automatic and free renewal of visit visas, a measure the kingdom introduced last year as part of efforts to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus. The Bahraini Nationality, Passports and Residence Affairs (NPRA) said the automatic and free renewal of the visit visas was stopped starting from January 22 (yesterday) and that fees earlier set for extending all types of visas are to be re-introduced. NPRA said that visitors can apply for extending the validity of all types of visitors via the government portal www.bahrain.bh or by visiting one of its services while observing precautions against COVID-19.

COVID-19 in GCC: 305 coronavirus cases reported in Bahrain, 263 in Qatar

Dubai: The Bahraini Health Ministry on Friday reported 305 coronavirus infections, taking the total number of confirmed cases in the Kingdom to 98,878. The death toll in Bahrain due to COVID-19 is still 366 as no new fatalities were reported in the past 24 hours. There were 354 recoveries from COVID-19, increasing total recoveries to 95,594. There are currently 15 COVID-19 cases in a critical condition, and 46 cases receiving treatment. In all, 2,903 are stable out of a total of 2,918 active cases. Qatar Qatar’s Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) on Friday reported 263 new cases of coronavirus while 141 people recovered from the virus in the last 24 hours. This brings the total number of confirmed infections in the country to 148,521 and recovered in Qatar to 144,619, leaving 3,654 active cases under treatment.
