France reportedly made deal to sell fighter jets to Egypt despite concerns over human rights abuses

FRANCE has reportedly made a deal to sell 30 Rafale jets to Egypt despite concerns over its human rights record. The deal is worth about €4 billion (£3.47bn), an official at France’s Armed Forces Ministry told reporters yesterday on condition of anonymity. Investigative news site Disclose had earlier reported a similar figure.  Egypt purchased 24 of the aircraft, produced by Dassault Aviation, in 2015. An Egyptian military statement said the latest purchase would be financed through a 10-year loan, but did not confirm the value of the deal or further details. France had not officially confirmed the deal as the Star went to press.

These matters figured in the meeting between external affairs minister S Jaishankar and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov. “We talked about the longstanding partnership in nuclear, space and defence sectors. We spoke of connectivity, including the International North-South Transport Corridor and the Chennai-Vladivostok Eastern Maritime Corridor,” Jaishankar told a joint news conference after the talks.
