BARNESVILLE Local activist Jill Hunkler, who has long spoken in opposition to the natural gas and oil industry, will testify Thursday Earth Day 2021 before the U.S. House Subcommittee on the Environment.
The discussion will focus on whether the federal government and international community should repeal fossil fuel subsidies. Hunkler will give virtual testimony along with a panel including youth climate activist Greta Thunberg, spokespersons from Harvard University and Stockholm Environmental Institute’s Climate Policy Program.

This week 40 world leaders are gathering at the Leaders Summit on Climate hosted by President Biden. The Summit aims to catalyze efforts to keep the 1.5C goal within reach and is envisioned as a key milestone in the run up to the crucial UN climate conference, COP26, to be held in Scotland later this year.
Yesterday, Climate Action Network International organized a pre-Summit press briefing where civil society organizations shared their expectations and demands for the Summit. Their voice was loud and clear: climate leadership means stopping fossil fuel expansion, doing your fair share to reduce emissions, and for rich countries to pay their climate debts they owe towards just and equitable climate action.

At the end of March, the EU project Urban Eco Islands was officially completed on the island of Aegna, which developed a number of environmentally friendly solutions.
The international project lasted for two years, from April 2019 to March 2021, and developed sustainable tourism solutions and infrastructure on the islands of Aegna and Vasikkasaari, Finland.
A new administrative map has been drawn up for Aegna, integrating the island s hiking trails and military heritage sites. The map is installed in four places on the island, and it, as well as the e-magazine introducing the island, can be found on the updated website www.tallinn.ee/aegna/.
Reason for concern: 3.8 billion people (49% of the global population) still rely on traditional energy sources to support household needs such as cooking, heating, and lighting. Due to this, household air pollution is a top-ten risk factor for global morbidity and mortality.
This webinar will provide a summary of research findings from STAR Grant R835421 “Experimental Interventions to Facilitate Clean Cookstove Adoption, Promote Clean Indoor Air, and Mitigate Climate Change” and related ongoing work at Stockholm Environmental Institute and North Carolina State University.
