Storm blows through Stanislaus County, knocks down trees, causes flooding [The Modesto Bee]
Jan. 27 There was a lot of wind and numerous calls about street flooding and downed trees and limbs that damaged vehicles as a strong storm blew through Stanislaus County over the last 12 hours.
However, as of early Wednesday morning, there were no reports of major structure damage or injuries, according to Modesto-area law enforcement.
The National Weather Service still had a high-wind warning in effect through 8 a.m. this morning as gusts of more than 60 mph and steady winds of up to 40 mph were felt throughout the county Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. A weather service list of peak winds over the past 24 hours showed 51 mph in Modesto and 56 in Knights Ferry.
Three stolen vehicles, two burglaries, one assault ends with arrest of single suspect Jesus Guzman Vega
A Modesto man is facing a litany of criminal charges for an alleged crime spree that traversed through Turlock, Ceres and Modesto on Tuesday.
In the span of seven hours, Jesus Guzman Vega, 32, of Modesto is suspected of stealing three vehicles, breaking into two homes, and committing one assault.
The hunt for Vega began around 11 a.m. Tuesday when the Turlock Police Department was notified of a residential burglary in the 500 block of Vermont Street. During the burglary, a 2014 Chevy Silverado was taken. The Turlock Police Department gathered evidence at the scene that indicated Vega was responsible for the burglary and auto theft, according to the Stanislaus County auto theft task force.

A months long criminal investigation into burglarized and vandalized communal mailboxes culminated in the arrest of three people on Thursday, Jan. 7, 2021. Waterford Probationer Rebecca Lynn Reagan, 36, and Hilmar resident Ryan William Swindle, 43, were detained during a traffic enforcement stop in Waterford having just left a residence subject to a search and arrest warrant in the 400 block of “E” Street.

Students remained on distance learning to start the new school year, the holidays looked decidedly different and COVID-19 continued to impact every aspect of people’s lives as the second half of 2020 unfolded. Here are excerpts from some of the top stories from The Oakdale Leader, July to December.
An Edison High School teacher has been arrested on suspicion of being an accessory in connection with a September slaying in Oakdale that claimed the life of a 39-year-old woman.
Teacher Nikkole Scruggs, 30, was arrested at 10 a.m. Wednesday at her Oakdale home and booked into the Stanislaus County jail as an accessory in the Sept. 26 homicide of Katrina Allen, the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release. Edison’s website lists her as a teacher in the AVID program.
Allen was shot in the 2300 block of Twildo Road later died in an Oakdale hospital.
Scruggs is accused of knowingly concealing evidence for murder suspect Stephen Frederick, allowing him stay in her home and providing him with rides that enabled him to evade arrest before he was ultimately taken into custody in the homicide, Sheriff’s Department reported.
