Monty Williams plucked Green off the Golden State Warriors coaching staff in the summer of 2019, where Green had been a part of Steve Kerr’s staff for the last one of their five straight NBA Finals appearances. Before that, Green had recently retired from his playing days. Now it appears that Green will take on the challenge of coaching the underachieving Pelicans with their stars Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram and a host of other talent that had been expected to earn a playoff spot this year but fell well short of that goal.

Green is helping with the Suns efforts against the Milwaukee Bucks in the NBA Finals, with Phoenix ahead two games to one in the best-of-seven series. Both ESPN and The Athletic reported Monday that he has emerged as the top contender for the position.

Green has earned respect as an assistant coach with the Warriors and now Suns. He played 12 seasons in the NBA as a second-round pick turned role player, including one year in New Orleans. The Pelicans definitely need a fresh voice. Green would provide that. But he’d also face immediate expectations. The Pelicans are trying to win quickly and appease Zion Williamson. This is a tricky job for anyone, especially a first-time NBA head coach. That said, there’s also a special opportunity with Williamson and a treasure trove of assets.
