Study reveals a unique mode of cell migration on soft ‘viscoelastic’ surfaces
Stanford engineers find that cancer cells exhibit a unique mode of migration on squishy materials, which are similar to biological tissues. In contrast, cell movement – a process central to cancer metastasis and other biological processes – is typically studied on very rigid materials. By Allison Gasparini
Inside your body, cell movement plays a crucial role in many significant biological processes, including wound healing, immune responses and the potential spread of cancer.
“Most people don’t die from having a primary tumor,” said Kolade Adebowale, a graduate student in chemical engineering, and a member of the Chemical Biology Interface (CBI) graduate program in Chemistry, Engineering & Medicine for Human Health (ChEM-H) at Stanford University. “The problem is when cancer cells from the tumor acquire the ability
New recipients for the 2021 NCCN Foundation Young Investigator Awards announced
The National Comprehensive Cancer Network
® (NCCN
®) and the NCCN Foundation
® today announced six new recipients for the 2021 NCCN Foundation Young Investigator Awards (YIA) Program. The honorees will receive up to $150,000 in funding, over two years, to advance important research on important issues in oncology. These early-career investigators from NCCN Member Institutions represent tomorrow s leaders for advancing cancer care. The NCCN Oncology Research Program (ORP) managed the selection process and will provide guidance and oversight for the projects over the grant duration. NCCN is committed to improving the lives of people with cancer by supporting research that is novel, transparent, and meaningful, said Wui-Jin Koh, MD, Chief Medical Officer, NCCN. The NCCN Foundation Young Investigator Awards Program exemplifies this objective by fostering emerging talent and exploring promising area

Researchers use single-cell RNA sequencing technologies to track cellular development in leaves
How do we become a complex, integrated multicellular organism from a single cell?
While developmental biologists have long researched this fundamental question, Stanford University biologist and HHMI investigator Dominique Bergmann s recent work on the plant Arabidopsis thaliana has uncovered surprising answers.
In a new study, published April 5 in
Developmental Cell, led by Bergmann and postdoctoral scholar Camila Lopez-Anido, researchers used single-cell RNA sequencing technologies to track genetic activity in nearly 20,000 cells as they formed the surface and inner parts of an Arabidopsis leaf.
Through this highly detailed technique, the researchers captured transient and rare cell states and found a surprising abundance of ambiguity in how cells traversed various identities, particularly early on within the stem cell population.
