The Here s Johnny scene from The Shining is one of the all-time classic terror scenes in cinema. The scene stars Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, and an ax.
Adapted from Stephen King s novel, The Shining takes place at The Overlook Hotel but was based on King s experience of having stayed at The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park.
That ax has to be one of the top set props of all time. The ax that Jack Nicholson wielded ax was not a foam prop ax, however; it was the real deal; It had to be to convey the madness of Jack Torrence out to kill his loving wife, hiding behind that bathroom door.
Fans of Stephen’s King’s novel, “The Shining,” or the movie of the same name starring Jack Nicholson will remember the Overlook Hotel where the action took place. The hotel which inspired King’s novel and eventually became the location where the TV miniseries’ hotel scenes were shot is the real Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, and it popped up this week with a recent ghost story of its own – one that will be added to the list of its ghost tales that include Room 217.
“So last night I decided it would be fun to go on a ghost tour at the beautiful iconic Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado. I took a ton of pictures during the tour of the inside of the Hotel as this is what they tell you to do as you never know what you’ll see on them. After the tour, my friends and I took more pictures on the outside of the Hotel and I was so surprised at what I didn’t see when taking them but what I saw after.”

The Shining and it’s still one of the most haunting and masterful films in cinematic history.
On May 23, 1980
The Shining hit theaters for the first time leaving audiences chilled to their bones.
The film, which is famously adapted from the
Stephen King book of the same name, follows Jack Torrance (
Jack Nicholson) as he becomes the winter caretaker of the vacant but haunted Overlook Hotel. Jack is accompanied by his wife Wendy (
Shelley Duval) and their son Danny (
Danny Llyod). After a brutal winter storm leaves the family stranded at the hotel, Jack slowly begins to lose his sanity, becoming a threat to both his wife and son.
Fleur Bradley had the idea of her latest book. She just was stuck on something: the setting.
So the Falcon-based author took a trip to a place where another writer once struck gold. At the famously spooky Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Bradley could see why it, famously, inspired Stephen King to pen “The Shining.”
“I didn’t see any ghosts, for what it’s worth,” Bradley said.
But she did go on one of the hotel’s nighttime walking tours, also known as ghost tours.
At the end of the tour, Bradley felt ready to start writing.
“I knew I wanted a cool Colorado setting,” she said. “After that, all the pieces just fell into place.”
