Pope Francis named a new bishop of Hong Kong on Monday, a long-delayed appointment that comes amid Sino-Vatican frictions and growing Western concern over human rights in the global financial hub.
Stephen Chow, 61, head of Hong Kong's Jesuit order, will replace Cardinal John Tong, who has held the post in a caretaker capacity following the death of the previous bishop, Michael Yeung, in January 2019.

Pope Francis has appointed Fr. Stephen Chow, S.J. as the next bishop of Hong Kong.
Chow, 61, has served as the provincial of the Jesuits’ Chinese Province since 2018. In that role, he led the Jesuit order in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, and mainland China as the Vatican-China deal was first signed and during the crackdown on Hong Kong’s democracy protest movement.
The Vatican announced Chow’s appointment on May 17, more than two years after the death of Bishop Michael Yeung Ming-cheung left Hong Kong without a permanent bishop.
Fr. Stephen Chow Sau-yan, 周守仁, was born in Hong Kong on Aug. 7, 1959. He studied in the United States, earning a bachelor’s and master’s degree in psychology from the University of Minnesota, before entering the Society of Jesus in Dublin, Ireland at the age of 25.

A multilingual Malaysian Chinese politician with a love of Hong Kong movies is being touted as a top candidate to lead Malaysia’s largest opposition party into the next general election.
If he is elected as secretary general of the Democratic Action Party (DAP) at its Central Executive Committee election on June 20, Anthony Loke Siew Fook, 44, will take over at a watershed moment for both the party and the country, amid political uncertainties and a pandemic that has crippled the economy.

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in the United States, and this year, it comes at a time when those communities are seeing historic strides in popular culture even as violence and racism persist.
This comes even as the entertainment industry is offering greater exposure to Asian and Asian American filmmakers, actors and stories. At this year's Academy Awards, Youn Yuh-jung, the scene-stealing co-star of the Oklahoma-made movie "Minari," made history as the first Korean performer to earn an Oscar, as did Chinese filmmaker Chloe Zhao, who became the first woman of color to win best director for her drama "Nomadland."

Local actress Chen Yixin — who turned 21 just recently — posted a short clip from her new movie Precious Is The Night on her Instagram on Thursday (April 29), and some of the comments have turned out to be more interesting than her post itself.
The video clip showed local hunkle Chuando Tan, 55, advancing onto Yixin seductively, backing her into a wall. Although the movie premiered this week, it was actually filmed a few years ago, which makes Yixin still a teen at that time.
When Chuando left a heart emoticon in the comment section, her father, 60-year-old local celebrity/hunkle Edmund Chen, replied hilariously: "Chuando boy, I'm watching."
