FHN helps parents with diapers in Freeport giveaway

Todd McKenna Special to The Journal-Standard FREEPORT The cost of keeping fresh diapers on hand can get high quickly for new parents.  Those costs can stretch a family s budget thin, especially in an economy upended by the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. The staff at FHN knows that, so they organized the first-ever diaper giveaway event Tuesday afternoon in the parking lot of the Lincoln Mall. The employees immediately recognized just how big the need in Freeport was when they pulled into the parking lot to set up the drive-thru event.  The cars were lined up an hour early, said Linn Carter of the FHN Value Support Team, which funded and organized the event.

Stephenson County vaccine efforts get streamlined

Having one list instead of three reduces confusion to citizens that want to get vaccinated, said Craig Bientema, administrator for the Health Department. The one list is shared between the Health Department and FHN and both organizations use this list to vaccinate people as determined by the priority groups. This is a wonderful collaboration to ensure the vaccination process is much smoother.   He emphasized any area resident who already was on one of the lists still will have a spot on the new list and there is no need to call to register again. To get on the vaccination appointment waiting list, residents should visit the FHN website at fhn.org.

Frustrated over the rocky start of coronavirus vaccinations in Illinois, local health officials expressed dismay over the state’s oversight of the rollout Thursday to a panel of state lawmakers. Public health officials in Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s administration countered that the pace of vaccinations is picking up and will get even faster as more vaccine doses become available in coming weeks. They pleaded for patience and blamed the sluggish start on the lack of enough doses to meet the overwhelming demand.
