Pen Bay Medical Center earns ‘A’ safety rating Fri, 04/30/2021 - 1:15pm ROCKPORT Pen Bay Medical Center (PBMC) received an “A” grade in the spring 2021 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, a national distinction recognizing PBMC’s achievements protecting patients from errors, injuries, accidents and infections. “This rating demonstrates how focused our care team is on providing a safe place for patients to come to for their health care,” said Mark Fourre, MD, president of PBMC and Waldo County General Hospital, in a news release. “As we continue to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, this has never been more important. I am proud of our care team’s commitment to our patients, their families and our community.”

Mexico firefighter awarded state honor

By Eileen M. Adams Staff Writer Read Article MEXICO – Richard Jones was out of high school for only a year when he discovered he loved firefighting. The Mexico Fire Department responded to a blaze on Whitman Street in 1975 and Jones decided to help because they were short-handed. “That’s what got me going,” he said Thursday afternoon as he discussed his 33 years with the department. Jones, a Mexico native and graduate of Mexico High School in 1974, and 12-year deputy chief of the department, was given the Lifetime Achievement Award at the annual Maine State Federation of Firefighters convention in Boothbay Harbor last weekend. Until this year, that same award was known as the Firefighter of the Year.

SMH welcomes Swan as diabetes educator

Read Article   NORWAY Stephens Memorial Hospital’s Outpatient Department Manager, Lissa Merrill, PT, is pleased to announce that Karen Swan, RN, has accepted the role of Diabetes Nurse Educator at Stephens. Karen is a registered nurse of fifteen years, with six years of experience as a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES). To become certified Karen had to have 1,000 hours educating and supporting people with diabetes and pass a written examination. Karen has a passion for helping people with diabetes. “Learning how to control your diabetes is important to good health, but I understand this can be overwhelming to many. I am grateful for the opportunity to help patients learn how to better manage their diabetes.” She recognizes how difficult it can be to manage diabetes and she feels rewarded when she can help patients feel better and empowered through lifestyle changes.
