49 years on, survivors remember Buffalo Creek flood

MAN — The 49th anniversary of the Buffalo Creek flood — which left thousands homeless and 125 dead on Feb. 26, 1972 — was remembered Friday at the Buffalo Creek Memorial Library in South Man, as well as a wreath laying by Gov. Jim Justice. The governor was visiting the area Friday morning to kick off the spring trout stocking season. At the roadside park near Kistler, he was accompanied by West Virginia Division of Natural Resources Director Steve McDaniel, West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection Cabinet Secretary Harold Ward and several members of the Buffalo Creek Watershed Association. Other local leaders were also present, including the three members of the Logan County Commission, Man Mayor Jim Blevins and Chapmanville Mayor Joel McNeely.

By West Virginia Governor s Office issued the following announcement on Feb. 26. Gov. Jim Justice kicked off the spring trout stocking season this morning, ceremonially stocking the first of over 1,400 trout that were released at Buffalo Creek and announcing that, through his Spring Trout Stocking Initiative and other improvements to trout stocking efforts across West Virginia, 1.2 million fish will be stocked statewide this year. “It is amazing – the great stuff that we re doing from the standpoint of our fisheries and all the wonderful stuff we re doing in regard to the nature in this unbelievable state,” Gov. Justice said. “To everyone who has been involved, I congratulate you in every way in the world.”

More than 100 people died in southern West Virginia when a dam failed. Gov. Justice visited the Buffalo Creek Memorial to lay a wreath remembering victims of the disaster. He also met with the Buffalo Creek Watershed for a ceremonial stocking of over 1,400 trout in the creek. Restoration work started about 20 years ago. In 1972, coal companies said an “act of God” caused a dam holding 132-million gallons of black water to break. State and federal investigations found Pittston Coal was directly to blame for the dam’s failure. The collapse killed 125 people injuring over 1,100, and left 4,000 people homeless.
