New York In 2005, on the eve of a solo show of his work in Southampton, N.Y., the abstract artist Frank Wimberley explained that he often viewed his artwork as living things. Giving a painting “time to breathe,” was an important part of the creative process, he said, adding that it wasn’t uncommon for him to step away from a work in progress. “Then you can return to it, just like with any living, breathing thing, and find a few surprises.”

Rosemary Karuga is known for her collage works depicting pastoral and domestic African scenes, commonly villagers and farmers and animals.
Art practices evolved around her work and scholarly works have been inspired and influenced by her practice.
At one point, she was the only woman to have her work internationally along acclaimed African artists like El Anatsui, Bruce Onobrakpeya, Ablade Glover and Tapfuma Gutsa.
A vast chapter of the still mostly untold story of women’s art in Kenya starts with Rosemary Namuli Karuga. Karuga passed away on 9 February 2021 at the age of 93. She was one of the pioneers who made major contributions to contemporary art on the continent and is recognised as one of the finest East African artists of her generation.

Sheila Bridges is fearless. Especially when it comes to pattern, color, and the truly iconoclastic design of her interiors and products. The former includes residences and offices, such as the 8,300-square-foot Harlem site for former President Clinton. It also encompasses academia where she has gone high, completing projects at Columbia University and Princeton University. As for products, she has created furniture and home accessories sold online and through brick-and-mortar retailers. A clear standout are her designs in Harlem Toile de Jouy. Here, Bridges upends the classical toile de jouy patterns with joie-de-vivre designs that celebrate being Black. Harlem Toile de Jouy started as a wallcovering and grew to include fabrics, bedding, plates, glassware, umbrellas, and enviable clothing.
