The program, titled “Parking Lot Picasso,” is run by the city’s Parks and Recreation Department and will use the south-end lot of the Sterling Heights Senior Center as its canvas. Forty parking spaces are being reserved for this year’s event, which will take place 6:30-7:30 p.m. Friday, April 30, with a rain date set for Saturday, May 1 at the same time.

On April 6, Sterling Heights city officials gathered at the Sterling Heights Community Center and rolled out a list of “Break-Free Blast” public events starting in late spring and continuing through the rest of the year. Sterling Heights Mayor Michael Taylor lamented how the Community Center had to close so soon after its Feb. 29, 2020, grand opening and how the last major event the city had prior to shutdowns was the Cultural Exchange. Even the 2020 Sterlingfest Art and Music Fair was canceled.

The Sterling Heights Historical Commission wants the city’s youth to do their part to help document for the history books how COVID-19 affected 2020. The city wants kids and teens ages 18 and younger to create artwork and essays that depict COVID-19 and its impact on current events in a way that will be historically relevant to the future and posterity. Organizers want to gather these works of art and writing as part of a “History Today: The Children of COVID-19” project.
